The rules and criteria listed below are written for the purpose of educating and maintaining the integrity and quality of the Fire Knife Championship, while encouraging a high level of performance and sportsmanship.

The hope is also that this experience will enhance the competition with a cultural background and a knowledge of the origin of the Samoan NIFO’OTI. From the ceremony for which the dance was derived, to the style, and the fundamentals of the “Ailao” (dance), performed the way Paramount Chief Letuli intended.

 

clean-fire-md1. Each competitor must fulfill all Registration Requirements.

Deadline for online registration is Midnight Friday, September 1st, 2017. There will be an additional administrative fee for registrations after this deadline.

clean-fire-md2. All warriors must check in by 3pm at PTAA Registration Area

clean-fire-md3. Competitor is NOT ALLOWED to borrow another warrior’s knife during the competition. This will result in disqualification to both borrower and lender of the knives. Performers MUST BRING THEIR OWN KNIVES! No exceptions.

clean-fire-md4. Warriors must report backstage by 5pm for Warrior Meeting

clean-fire-md5. Warriors must wear PTAA lava lava onstage for Opening Ceremony. Competition attire MUST BE ISLAND PRINT. No exceptions.

clean-fire-md6. The competition is all inclusive with routine of both single and double knives. A performance with just a single knife will not be allowed. It is considered NOT ELIGIBLE TO COMPETE. Come prepared or go away disappointed. No Exceptions.

Elite Tama Warrior: 18 and over

Prime Tama Warrior: 13 to 17 years

clean-fire-md8) 3 kneeling motions

clean-fire-md9) 3 laying motions

clean-fire-md10) Hook double knives for 3 moves

 

Routine length: 25 Points

(The time clock begins at the first spin or wave of the knife)

clean-fire-md Warriors MUST be visible & stay on stage at all times.  The “Designated Person” is responsible for soaking, lighting & tossing knives to the Warrior.

clean-fire-md All competitors must wear printed Samoan lavalava, trimmed and cut modestly.

clean-fire-md Must wear Samoan necklace of shells, leaves, or any Samoan material

clean-fire-md Anklets must be worn, Samoan materials only

clean-fire-md War paint is acceptable

 

Judges Scoring Criteria

clean-fire-md Drops – 5 points will be deducted for each drop

clean-fire-md No warrior is to leave the stage at any time during his/her performance this includes jumping off the stage

clean-fire-md There will be a 20 second break between single knife portion and double knife portion of performance, during which the dancer will remain onstage

 

Safety Regulations

clean-fire-mdKnives must be soaked and spun off in the marked areas only

clean-fire-mdALL Warriors may have one (1) “Designated Person” to soak their knives – under the supervision of a Fire Knife Master spotter.  No exceptions.

clean-fire-mdSoaking containers will be provided.

clean-fire-mdNo water bottles or any other such containers may be used.

clean-fire-mdGasoline may not be used – any dancer using gasoline will be eliminated

clean-fire-mdNo contestant may hold fuel in the mouth for any reason – any dancer doing so will be eliminated.

Other Regulations

clean-fire-mdLewd Conduct Deduction – minus 25 points:

Sexual innuendos, bringing attention to the genital area of the body is prohibited and cause for a 25 point deduction.
